I DREAM VALLEY

Once upon a time in a nice little galaxy, on a beautiful blue planet, was a man. A nice man.

He had worked hard all his life. He had worried about life and all, and everything and also about himself. In his life so far he had gained and lost fortunes. He had found and lost women. He had built and lost houses, and he had sired children and lost them. His worries had eaten inwards and made him ill. His dreams were often bad and wild and many nights he woke up from terrible nightmares.

As this man loved walking, he walked around the country a lot. Mostly in his holidays and whenever his health would allow him. One night he had put up his tent in a valley not far from the city. He liked it since it was quiet and nice. But he couldn’t find anything special about it.

Yet there was.

Soon he would find out, for in the night he dreamed. But this time his dreams weren’t frightful and horrible like they used to be. They were nice. For the first time in years he had clear and good dreams. Than he woke up he felt great. It was almost as if his dreams had taken a lot of his worries away.

On his way back to town he camped at the same spot and again he had nice dreams. He could see himself much clearer and he started to understand himself better.

From then he went to the valley as often as he could.

And every night he spent there he had nice dreams, he became a lot happier, he had a lot less worries and he started to find himself. He knew very well that it wasn’t a coincidence that his good dreams always came when he slept in the valley.

So one day he decided to go and live in the valley and only have nice dreams from now on. He tried to find out to whom the valley belonged, but when he found out that it belonged to a group of people as an inheritance and that it was a quite tricky and complicated situation, he just bought a second hand caravan and put it at the bottom of the valley in a hidden spot.

For a while he lived there quite happily on his own, but one day there was trouble. Some of the people that had inherited the land came to inspect their property. They wanted to see the valley with their own eyes to find out what they could do with it.

They found the man and his caravan and a big dispute started. “Instant removal” and “The cheek” were some of the things said. The man offered to buy the valley, but they wouldn’t hear of it.

Give me a lease,” be begged. And after long conversations he was given a lease, on the condition that he looked after the land and kept it in a good state. First he was very happy with this solution but when he continued to have nice dreams and realized there was some kind of healing quality about them, he started to invite move and more of his friends. They came and they stayed. As every single one of them appeared to have nice dreams as well, be became sure that this valley was the valley of dreams, of healing dreams.

His landlords weren’t happy with all these people coming and going and didn’t want to renew the lease. The man desperately wanted to buy the

Land, but when the owners finally named a price it was such a dazzling sum that he could only shake his head.

Then our day a friend brought a rich man along. That man hadn’t had a proper night’s sleep for years as the result of his worries, for he was a real millionaire.

He slept sound and safe for night after night and he had wonderful dreams. And when he heard about the problems with the landlords, he took out his chequebook and wrote out a big cheque, covering much more than the money needed just to buy the land.

Our man was overwhelmed. All his friends were happy as well, for now they were sure they could always come and stay in the valley for a couple of nights of good dreams.

They formed a committee, raised funds and soon enough a wonderful building arose. Small huts were erected all over the valley, where all the guests could sleep and dream.

In due time everything was finished. People started to arrive as soon as the new centre was opened and before long it was fully booked.

And all those people that came had nice dreams, healing dreams. People who hadn’t slept well for years came and were healed. People suffering from awful nightmares came and were cured. People suffering from severe insomnia came and were restored back to life. It was great, just great.

Dream valley became a renowned institute and even doctors started to send their patients there.

Sooner or later you might even go there yourself for a couple of nights. You will have the best dreams in your life.

And of course they all lived happily ever after

II THE BIG TOAD

Once upon a time in a beautiful mountainous country, somewhere on this old blue planet of ours, there lived two girls in a house on a hill. There was a pond in the garden and near to it, under a pile of rocks, lived a toad. A very big toad, He was as ugly as only toads can be, but he was a very nice toad all the same.

The girls knew him well and came to see him almost every day. They talked a lot and the girls showed him their homework. He would be strict with them on such occasions and told them over and over again how important it was to do your utmost best at school and to do your homework regularly and learn as much as you can.

Of course the two girls never told their mum about the toad. She wouldn’t have believed them anyway.

Best of all they loved the times he told them stories or played games with them. And of course when he showed them one of his magic tricks. For the toad was a great wizard. He could do amazing things. On special occasions he would make the raindrops play music.

Every drop turned into a note and there would be amazing tunes. Or he turned the raindrops into different colours and that was a wonderful spectacle.

The girls were very happy with such miracles.

The toad was big, I told you. Almost as big as a cat, but of course he didn’t look like a cat at all.

He had some strange habits as well, sometimes he would smoke strange herbs to get into a dreamlike state and then he would reveal some of the future.

Important things that would happen sooner or later.

One day the girls brought a friend of theirs along to see the toad. They hadn’t told her that they could talk to the toad or that he could work magic. They merrily wanted to show the toad to their friend. And she was sure impressed. Never ever had she seen such a big toad.

Towards the end of term the children were all allowed to bring their pets to school and the two girls asked the big toad if he would mind coming.

He agreed, but warned them to keep the other animals away from him. He could defend himself well enough, but he didn’t want to hurt others when he could avoid it. That night he called the blue raven who is a messenger of the gods, as I’m sure you all know.

He asked him to take a message to the gods. There was a special magic he wanted to perform and he needed some assistance.

Late it the evening the blue raven returned to tell him everything would be fine. So when the great day came he hopped along with the girls, down the road and into the school building. He sat down under their desk and waited patiently for the others to arrive with their pets.

One boy, who had brought his horse along, was asked to leave it in the courtyard, but all the other pets were allowed in. There were lots of animals, one nicer and more beautiful than the other.

Two dogs, three goats, a hamster, several goldfish, some tame birds and even a hedgehog.

One girl had a pig that was very clever and a boy had a parrot.

Not one of the animals was as ugly as the big toad, but none of thorn was as clever as the toad either.

The two girls could of course not tell the others that their toad could talk and perform miracles.

Sc they just enjoyed looking at the other animals, knowing in their hearts that their big toad beat them all.

The teacher let every child in turn present their pets and they all had to tell the name and the age of their pets. And how long they had kept it, if there was anything special about them and so on. It was great fun.

When it was the turn of the two girls the toad hopped up on the table and looked around. Then suddenly dark clouds appeared and the rain started falling.

But it didn’t last long. The last raindrops turned into different colours and two rainbows showed across the sky.

Where the two rainbows met a strange light stone. Out of the light a dragon cane, circled around and was gone. The rainbows twisted around each other until you couldn’t tell anymore which was which.

And where the two rainbows met the ground a big pillar of steam rose up. A loud clap of thunder was heard and the big toad jumped out of the window, followed by the two girls.

He went to where the rainbow came out of the earth and started to dig, soon enough helped by the girls.

In no time at all the other children joined them, some with shovels and they all dug away at the soil.

Cling’, a shovel struck metal. And: “clang”, as it hit the pot of gold.

All together they carried the pot of gold into the school and stared speechless at the treasure.

From now on the school was rich and all the best materials could be bought for the children.

The school became famous and soon it was the best school you could go to.

The two girls were well aware that their big toad had helped to organize all this, but the others didn’t know. But that didn’t really matter, for they all lived happily ever after.

III THE WOMAN WHO ASKED FOR MORE AND THE MAN WHO ASKED FOR LESS

Once upon a time in a small town, in a big poor country on this old blue

planet we all love so much, there was a woman. And this woman was very poor. She was so poor that she couldn’t buy the food she needed and had to beg. It wasn’t her fault at all, she was willing to work and to do odd jobs, but so were so many others.

She lived in a ramshackle hut under very primitive conditions. Her clothes were old and threadbare, but she kept them cleaner then most. She had a strange habit, very strange indeed under her circumstances. Whenever she begged and was given some food, she asked for a little bit more.” You see, I need a little bit more because I need to give my family some food,” she used to say.

Many people were annoyed with her, for it was not done by beggars to ask for more, never mind if they had a special reason or not. In this same country, hut far away it another small town, there lived a man who was a beggar as well. He was old and shabby, slept in the gutters and he was remarkable. He was very confident, never lost his trust in the ultimate good ending of things and he was soft and friendly. People liked him.

He had a peculiarity as well. Whenever he begged and was given some food, he asked for a little less, “ My family will give me some”, he explained. They wondered about this strange man, but indeed, there was always someone who gave him a little extra. Not his family though, for he didn’t have a family at all. But to him everyone belonged to his family. To him mankind was one big family.

The woman didn’t have a family either, but every day someone would come and ask for her help. And she would feed them with the little she had. This man and this woman never knew about each other. They lived far away and they were both to busy trying to survive than that they could go travelling around.

One day a new pope was to be installed and since there would be a prolonged party, beggars from all over the country went to the capital. They all hoped for an easy life amongst the overflow from the rich and wealthy during the initiation. They were right and they were wrong.

The people in the capital were surely more generous during the initiation of the new pope, but there were a lot more beggars as well. The man who asked for less came to the town as well. He wanted to see the new pope. And the woman who asked for more had travelled to the capital too. She was patiently waiting in the queue in front of the bishop’s palace where the food was dealt out to the poor and the hungry, when there was some commotion.

A man whose turn it was to receive his helping, was asking for less.

And that was unheard of! All the other beggars thronged around him to see this crazy man. They had never heard of anything the like.

When it was her turn, the woman asked for a little hit more. In no time at all she was surrounded by the other beggars. This was madness! Maybe it was daring, but certainly it was very rude. It was just not done.

The man who asked for less had watched the scene and stepped forward. The crowd that was watching these two strange beggars grew and grew. Shouting and comments flew around and there was a lot of cursing. But the man who asked for less and the woman who asked for more met each other and started to talk. They moved out of the crowd and sat down. They were intrigued by each other. For the rest of the day they walked around together, and slowly they fell it love. They decided to get married and asked a priest if it would be possible for the bishop to perform the ceremony. The bishop was busy but still he sent for them and listened to their story. He found it so touching and amazing that he told his friend the new pope about it.

And the pope was so impressed that he decided to marry them himself in his own holy church! The woman who asked for more and the man who asked for less were married in due time, and everyone talked about them and their stories. They were given nice clothes an apartment to live in and they both got a job at the bishop’s palace. And of course they lived happily ever after.

IV LUCIE’S COUNTRY

Lucie’s country is big. Lucie’s country spreads for miles and miles and there are parts in it she hardly knows yet. She learns more about her

country every day, for she goes around and inspects it. She needs to know. Cows live in her country and sheep. The sun warms it and the rain cools it. The stars watch over Lucie’s country.

Horses live there and rabbits. Cats and a lot of birds. Lucie doesn’t like the birds that much, hut that is pure jealousy.

She hasn’t got wings you see, and she thinks she should have them if anyone at all.

The birds can come and go and ignore the boundaries of Lucie’s country. They do irritate her and sometimes annoy her a lot. So she tells them loud and clear, over and over again.

There are deer and mice in Lucie’s country. And people. Most of them she knows well and she likes then, but she doesn’t understand why they don’t want to play with her all the time. Don’t they live in her country after all? She has accepted people as strange. Often there is no way of telling what they will do next. And they use those strange vehicles. They suddenly disappear in them or come back in clouds of smoke and noise. Lucie finds them disturbing at times. She is the queen of the house of course, but at times she thinks the others don’t pay her enough attention. But Lucie’s country is big and she is busy. There is enough to do. At times she cries at the moon or criticizes the birds for the noise

they make.

At night she goes for a walk, preferably alone.

She can sleep anywhere she likes, but often prefers her own bed. Her close friends come often to visit her, to pay their respect and to play with her. Lucie is very lucky to have her own country, but she thinks it could be a fair bit bigger. She is happy with her visitors and welcomes then in her own charming way. She is dark and wonderful, youthful and gracious when she runs along. And Lucie is my friend and if you go see her she will he yours as well.

V NIGHTINGALE SHOES

Once upon a time in a far away hot country, on this beautiful little planet of ours, there lived an emperor who loved music.

He loved singing and dancing as well; and artists were generally well respected and paid in his realms.

In his palace gardens he kept all kinds at birds, for he loved their singing and could listen to it for hours, Of course he had nightingales too, lots of them.

Their music filled his heart with joy and peace and many times he rather ignored the state affairs to listen to their sweet songs.

When people wanted to give presents to the emperor it was easy. They always choose musical instruments or singing birds. It was easy to please him, and the people were glad about it.

The emperor’s father had been very hard to please since he didn’t have any hobbies or special likings.

One day, as every year, the emperor and the court went to the mountains to escape the terrible heat of the summer in the capital.

That was a complicated operation, for there were so many people and things to be moved and to attend to.

One of the biggest problems was, as every year, to bring the birds from the palace garden along.

The emperor wouldn’t move without his beloved birds.

But somehow it was all done and organized and when they all had settled down in the summer palace, life became a smooth and pleasant river again. And it was very pleasant indeed to live in the coo1 mountain air, to enjoy the spectacular views and to live the good life of the royals.

On a walk one day, the emperor visited an old monastery nearby. In the gardens to the back of the monastery were a couple of small cottages where monks could live in seclusion.

One of the monks came to meet the emperor and gave him a present. A stunning present.

It was a pair of shoes. And they weren’t new either. They were rather old and worn.

The emperor didn’t know what to think of this present, he was not accustomed to receive second hand gifts.

Please, your highness”, the monk explained. “These shoes are not for walking. Just wait till evening and listen”.

At night the emperor sat down to listen to the shoes. First he heard nothing and he was rather startled and displeased and wondered if he should not express his anger over such a strange gift, but then the singing started.

The most wonderful melodies he had ever heard came from the shoes. He couldn’t believe his ears.

Quick1y he ordered his servants to come and listen. He wanted to be assured that others could hear this magical music too.

And they could.

In complete silence they all sat down and listened to the most wonderful and heartbreaking music on this world. Tears were streaming down their eyes.

The emperor was the happiest man alive. But he couldn’t understand how the shoes could sing. And sing more beautiful then the all the nightingales themselves at that!

So he went to question the monk who tad given them to him. Arriving at the monastery he could only find out that the monk was gone and no one knew where be could be found.

Although the emperor sent his soldiers and guards after him, he couldn’t be traced and seemed to have disappeared altogether.

The emperor asked his ministers of state tot an explanation, he asked the priests and his friends, but no one could tell him why the shoes could sing.

Meanwhile he listened to their music day and night and he grew happy and glad.

He stopped worrying about anything at all. He dealt with problems and persons in a fast and offhand way, and all his actions and decisions proved to be right and effective.

The country prospered and the people lived healthy and happy lives. After a long time the nightingale-shoes went for a walk. They wanted a change of scenery and decided to go and visit another country.

So they stepped out of the palace, waited in the dirt and dust beside the road until some one would find them. The poor peasant that found them in the end was well pleased with the shoes. He had been going bare foot for ages, and he didn’t mind how old and worn the shoes looked.

He was on his way to visit his ill sister in a far away place, and he walked gladly in his new shoes for many many days.

That’s why the emperor and his servants couldn’t find a trace of the nightingale shoes, never mind how much they all searched and looked.

The nightingale shoes were gone.

But the emperor still had all his birds and all the music and dances and songs to enjoy.

Where the nightingale shoes went to in the end is not known. From time to time there are rumours that someone has heard them singing in far away places, but they seem to be on the run. The emperor finally found the monk who had given them to him, and learned why the shoes could sing sweeter then nightingales. And if you ever find an old pair of shoes that can sing more beautiful than nightingales, well, then you have found them, and they might stay with you for a while, so that you can live happily ever after.

VI SHOE AND HORSE AND THE MAN WHO SOLD LIES

SHOE was walking with HORSE. HORSE wanted to run and asked SHOE it he wouldn’t mind waiting for a while. SHOE waited and HORSE ran. When HORSE was tired he came back to SHOE and they walked.

Still it was hard enough for SHOE to keep up.

SHOP didn’t have four strong legs to carry him. He didn’t even have one leg to carry him; he had to walk all by himself.

But SHOE wanted to walk around. With HORSE and without HORSE.

He wanted to walk with SUN and STARS and the entire WORLD.

SHOE wanted to go PLACES and see THINGS. And SHOE wanted to find HER. He knew HER, he knew she was around SOMEWHERE and he wanted to find HER back, he talked about it with HORSE and HORSE agreed.

SHOE needed to go PLACES and find HER in the WORLD. So SHOE went. On TRAIN and BUS, on PLANE. SHOE went on BOAT and BICYCLE.

He walked PATH and AVENUE. To look for HER.

One day SHOE met the MAN who sold LIES. All his LIFE he had only been good at LIES, and one day he thought about selling LIES for a living. So he started to sell LIES. And business went well. He didn’t make much MONEY in the beginning, but he sold a lot of LIES.

He sold LIES to EVERBODY.

It was amazing how many PEOPLE needed LIES. Big LIES and small LIES. Soon he sold LIES by POST and over the PHONE.

From his OFFICE and from the BAR. In his HOUSE and EVERYWHERE.

He sold so many LIES that he lost TRACK. SHOE was impressed. He had never needed a LIE in his LIFE and he couldn’t imagine he would pay MONEY for LIES.

The MAN who sold LIES told many LIES to SHOE and all for free. SHOE enjoyed LIES but didn’t trust the MAN any more. And he had to go ON. He wanted to TRAVEL, see WORLD and find HER.

SHOE went to PALACE to see QUEEN. He couldn’t get near enough to talk but he could see QUEEN well enough. Would SHE know anything about HER?

SHOE wanted to travel to MOON and STARS so he went to ROCKET. ROCKET took him to MOON, afterwards to STARS. SHOE loved STARS. He liked MOOM fine but he loved STARS.

He asked STARS about HER, but she didn’t know HER. He went back to WORLD with ROCKET and walked AROUND. He came across LIGHT who switched ON and OFF. LIGHT wanted to walk around as well and SHOE told LIGHT he could come along. So SHOE and LIGHT walked WORLD together. They went EVERYWHERE.

SHOE wanted to find HER and LIGHT wanted to find SHADOW. LIGHT could find DARK but SHADOW always fled. Many TIMES he could see SHADOW but as soon as LIGHT came near her SHADOW fled. It was really horrible. It was awful, LIGHT became DEPRESSED and SHOE lost HOPE.

He wondered if he would ever find HER. SHOE went to RAINBOW for HELP and HELP was given. SHOE found HER at last.

They were HAPPY. They were together again and they were a PAIR. LIGHT was sad. He found SHADOW again and again but couldn’t get near her.

LIGHT is still looking for SHADOW but SHOE was with HER. They lived happily ever after.

VI NIGHT AND DAY

In the BEGINNING there was DARKNESS. Only DARKNESS. Then TIME awoke and ALL began to happen.

With the beginning of TIME LIGHT was born. Much later DARKNESS became NIGHT and LIGHT became DAY.

LIGHT was dark and quiet and silent and she was very beautiful.

DAY was light and busy and loud and he was very handsome.

LIGHT knew about DAY, for everyone knew about DAY and LIGHT and she wanted to meet DAY.

But for a lone time DAY was too busy to think about LIGHT.

NIGHT was lonely and sleepy. She really wanted to meet DAY but she never could.

Wherever DAY was, there was no place for NIGHT. And where ever NIGHT was there was no place for DAY.

NIGHT suffered and PAIN was born.

In the beginning PAIN was small. NIGHT wanted to meet DAY for a long time before DAY thought about NIGHT. But once DAY thought about NIGHT he desperately wanted to meet her.

They couldn’t get together and PAIN grew. NIGHT was cold and lonely and she wanted to be with DAY.

DAY was hot and busy and he needed to be with NIGHT. PAIN grew until the GODS noticed.

They didn’t like PAIN. They wanted DAY and NIGHT to be HAPPY. One day they made RAINBOW.

RAINBOW is now the bridge between HEAVEN and EARTH, but first she was the bridge between DAY and NIGHT. They came together and talked. They were very HAPPY.

DAY and NIGHT had two children, MORNING and EVENING. MORNING had a lot of DAY in him and some of NIGHT.

EVENING had a lot of NIGHT in her and some of DAY. They were lovely children and they were a HAPPY family. They lived happily until the END of TIME.

THE END

VIII LIFE AND DEATH

When TIME began LIFE was born.

LIFE was the mother of ALL and she was a good and generous mother.

She gave birth to LIGHT and LIGHT and DARK made MORNING and EVENING.

MORNING borne WATER and EVENING borne AIR.

When WATER and FIRE and EARTH and AIR came all together, LIFE gave them more children.

FISH for WATER, TREES for EARTH and BIRDS for AIR.

TREE borne many children and she made MAN.

MAN was a miracle but he was alone and suffered.

PAIN was born and grew.

PAIN grew until the GODS noticed.

They made WOMAN for MAN.

WOMAN was lonely and wanted to meet MAN, but MAN was busy.

WOMAN suffered and PAIN grew.

Until the GODS noticed. They wanted MAN and WOMAN to be happy.

So they sent SLEEP to man and now WOMAN could go and meet MAN.

MAN woke up and saw WOMAN. He was glad.

They talked and talked and they were happy.

They stayed together and had many children.

They had BED and HOUSE, they had ROOF and FOOD.

They had a good life.

WOMAN and MAN had so much WATER and FIRE in them, so much AIR and EARTH.

They had LIGHT and DARK in them and COLD and HOT.

As long as they were happy LIFE was very good. But when they were not happy PAIN grew.

PAIN borne ILLNESS and PAIN disturbed the balance.

The GODS didn’t like PAIN and tried to get rid of him.

DEATH was born.

Because LIFE is always different DEATH can only take a little bit of

LIFE.

DEATH likes to grow and become mighty, but LIFE just laughs and keeps changing.

TIME supports LIFE and they get on well.

They are happy together and have many many children

THE END

IX HOT AND COLD

HOT was the son of DAY and COLD was the daughter of NIGHT.

HOT and COLD wanted to meet for a long time.

But where ever HOT was, there was no place for COLD.

And where ever COLD was there was no place for HOT.

They couldn’t get together.

They suffered.

PAIN was born and grew.

Until the GODS noticed.

The GODS didn’t like PAIN.

They wanted HOT and COLD to he happy.

So they made WATER. And WATER could be hot and cold.

They could finally meet.

And they talked and were very happy

They loved each other dearly.

They had a child and she was called TEMPERATE.

They had more children and they were very happy.

They lived happily ever after.

THE END

X WATER AND FIRE

NIGHT and DAY had many children.

As TIME went by, NIGHT bore WATER and DAY borne FIRE. WATER was cold and dark and wet and weak and she was very lovely. FIRE was hot and light and dry and he was very handsome. WATER wanted to meet FIRE for a long time but FIRE was too busy to think about WATER.

When FIRE grew older he thought of WATER and he wanted to meet her. They both wanted to get together but they couldn’t.

PAIN was born.

Where ever FIRE was there was no place for WATER and whereever WATER was there was no place for FIRE.

PAIN grew until the GODS noticed.

They didn’t like PAIN. They wanted WATER and FIRE to be HAPPY. They let FIRE heat WATER until she rose up to the HEAVENS.

She met FIRE and they talked, they liked each other very much and they were HAPPY.

Together they had a child and she was called STEAM.

They had more children and they were all wonderful. They had CLOUDS and MIST and RAIN and SNOW. They were a HAPPY family.

And they lived happily ever after.

THE END

XI GREED AND LOVE

GREED met LOVE.

LOVE was beautiful.

GREED wanted to have her.

All of her.

LOVE had to go away.

She couldn’t stand it.

THE END

XII PAIN AND PLEASURE

PAIN and PLEASURE knew about each other. They wanted to meet for they were very curious.

PAIN was strong and terrible and he could be found every-where. PLEASURE was weak and soft and wonderful and she could be found everywhere too.

But somehow PAIN and PLEASURE never came together. Wherever PLEASURE was, there was no place for PAIN. for PLEASURE.

And wherever PLEASURE was, there was no place for PAIN. It was horrible.

PLEASURE suffered and PAIN was no longer happy. One day the GODS noticed end they made MEN. IN MEN PAIN and PLEASURE could meet and be together

The GODS didn’t like it, for they didn’t like PAIN, but for their love of PLEASURE they wanted to help her

PLEASURE and PAIN were not happy together. PAIN always wanted to grow and be stronger.

PLEASURE didn’t like PAIN anymore and tried to avoid him.

The GOPS helped her and there are many people now where PAIN has gone and only PLEASURE is left.

She feels fine on her own.

But PAIN has grown bitter and he is full of SPITE.

He is a dangerous enemy.
