I THE HORSE AND THE SKELETON

Now listen good for the story I have to tell you is so strange and rare and beautiful, and I don’t know where it came from. Maybe out of the fullness of my heart, maybe the Gods in their wisdom told me.

Once upon a time there was a horse and a man.

They lived a quiet life in a remote area of this country you all love so much and know so well. Actually I think it was quite near by. Most of the time the man was busy, just organising his daily meals, and that of his horse. Of course, if you are all on your own, with only a horse for company most of the time, there is a lot you have to do.

Now this horse was as normal in a way as any horse you have ever seen, but the man was a skeleton. He didn’t feel like a skeleton, he felt perfectly normal. He could walk and sit and work like everybody.

Eat and drink and sing and be happy. And because he had lived on his own for many years, and there wasn’t a mirror in his house, he had never seen himself as others might see him. So this man and his horse lived like this for many years. The last people he had seen were his parents before they died, and all had seemed to be normal and

Nobody knew if he had always looked like a skeleton, or if this had happened more recently. But that doesn’t matter at all, since the man knew it not.

One day, the man felt a strong longing for company, he just wanted to see some other humans and talk to them, be with them. So he packed some food and travel necessities in a bag, looked after his house, cleaned and organised everything in such a way that he could be away for a while, and of they went.

He remembered his parents talking about a village, some day walking away, and he decided to go there. Now you know of course that in those days this country was for a far greater part covered in forests, and our man and his horse enjoyed immensely the beauty of this land.

They travelled slowly, resting in nice places and drinking in the beauty of nature with their whole beings. On the way, the man hunted, found grass and hay for the horse, and they had a wonderful time.

Then they came to the village one day, and slowly, the man rode into it on his horse. The first people he met reacted strangely that our man didn’t know what happened. They stared at him and began to scream and shout. Mothers rushed their children inside, people locked doors and windows, and they all screamed so loud and mad that the horse got a fright and went mad and just ran out of the village.

Our skeleton had a hard time trying to stay on top of the horse, and he was glad when after many miles the horse finally calmed down and he could get off. Exhausted as he was after all this, he just fell asleep and the horse looked after him that night.

When he awoke early next morning, the stars were still faintly visible in the heavens. He made a fire, fed the horse and himself and thought:" I never heard of people like this. There was something like a collective madness in them. Maybe they had all eaten or drunk something wrong.

Never mind I will just go to the next village."

And on his way he went. Again the skeleton and the horse had a wonderful trip, enjoyed every minute of it, until they came to the next village. Because here exactly the same thing happened as in the first village As soon as people saw the skeleton they panicked, went mad and wild. Children were dragged into the house, doors and shutters were locked, and again the horse couldn’t stand it finally and ran off like mad.

Our man was really upset. He thought, "Has the whole world gone mad? What is happening?"

And because he didn’t know that to the people he appeared as a skeleton, he couldn’t understand. After he calmed down he talked to his horse and said, "Lets go on, there was one more village not to far away from here where my parents used to go. Let’s go there, for I really long for some human company." So on their way they went.

The weather was beautiful, nature in all its abundant glory surrounded them and life was perfect for a while for these two. As they neared the next village, the man wondered what would happen. When they came upon the first house and knocked on the door, the man inside opened the door and gave one laud, piercing cry and fainted. This village was different from the first two villages though here the houses stood mostly on their own, with lots of space in between. So our skeleton rode his horse slowly to the next house.

Again shrieks of terror were his welcome, and he couldn’t believe it. The horse just walked on and on, and they came to a huge building. It must have been some sort of church or temple and our skeleton went in to have a look. And he liked what he saw. A big, beautiful room with low benches cushions, flowers, nice paintings, some statues and the smell of incense still lingering in the air. He went to one of the walls where he spotted a skeleton. He thought this was quite strange in a place like this. As he tried to get nearer he suddenly bumped his head. He stepped back and tried again, because he really wanted to have a close look at this skeleton. Again he bumped his head. Then he raised his hands and tried to touch the skeleton, the skeleton raised its hands and tried to touch our man. Our man had for the first time in his life come across a mirror!

Slowly, very slowly he finally realised that he himself looked like a skeleton, and he began to understand the reactions of all the people he had met. For a while he rested and sat down, thinking hard and trying to understand the consequences of all this. Then he went home.

For many, many years again he and the horse lived a simple, quiet life. Busy with growing what he needed. And slowly the man grew older, and over the years his longing for some human company grew in his heart again, until one day he knew he had to go out into the world once more and try his luck. So he made his preparations and set out on his horse.

This time he travelled in another direction, where he knew there should be a village too. Far away though and it took them a long time to get there. They travelled slowly again immensely enjoying the beautiful nature. One day he saw the first signs of human presence and he knew they were getting nearer. They came to a bend in the road and had to cross a river. Since it was such a fine, warm day, our skeleton even went for a swim, let the horse have a rest and graze and even went for a wee nap in the early hours of the afternoon.

When he woke up he saw a child. She was sitting in the grass, playing with some kind of doll. It looked like a rag doll, maybe made by her mother or older sister.

This girl was humming while she was completely immersed in her own game. Our man’s heart opened out to this lovely little girl. Then he thought of the shock she might get as she saw him, and he decided to leave as quietly as he could. So he got upon his horse and tried to turn around and disappear silently. But this horse, you should know, had a will of it’s own.

It had seen the little girl and wanted to go to her. The horse thought she might be friendly to him and even give him some sugar or a carrot. So, as it happened, the horse ignored the man’s wishes and walked straight to the little girl. As she looked up and saw the two coming towards her, she smiled and cried out with delight: "A horse, a beautiful horse, and a traveller! How wonderful!" And she welcomed them, asked the man lot’s of questions, and in one go, went on to tell about her rag doll, her brothers and sisters and she chatted away merrily as anything. She took our man by his hand and the horse on the other side, and so she walked them home to her parents.

This whole family were so pleased to see a traveller that our man just had to stay. He stayed for a week or more, and they all became such good friends. He and the father went hunting together, he helped them with some farm work and they had a wonderful time. They arranged to see each other regularly and if they have not died by now, you still might find them visiting each other, and being the best friends in the world.

No one knows, but I think it was the ability of the child to see his true nature, her belief, that gave back our man his human flesh and skin.

THE END.

II THE FISHERMAN OF THE STARS

Once upon a time there was a man and a woman.

They loved each other so dearly and deeply that it was a miracle. Because his woman made him so utterly happy, one day the man wanted to give her a special present. So he went to the harbour and got into his boat. He sailed his boat across the heavens and cast his net and he caught all those wonderful sparkling stars.

Then he sailed his boat back again, and after putting his boat safely in the harbour, he put the net with the stars over his shoulders and went home. But on the way home he met three men.

The first was a priest, and he looked at the sparkling stars and wanted to have them. So, he spoke to our fisherman, "Son, give me those jewels in the name of God, so that I can put them in the church, to the greater glory of the Lord."

Our man just smiled and said, "Father, I can’t give you these stars, for they do not belong to me. They belong to my woman, and they came as a gift from the heavens." And on he went.

Then he met a second man and this was a rich merchant. As soon as he saw the sparkling stars he wanted to possess them, more than anything in the world. So he tried to buy them from our fisherman, and offered him gold and silver and even diamonds.

But our fisherman just smiled and said, "I can’t sell these stars to you, they belong to my woman." And on he went.

He was almost home when he met the last man. It was a prince and as soon as he had seen the sparkling stars he wanted to possess them.

So he spoke to our fisherman, "Give those jewels to me in the name of the king, for this beauty truly belongs to the king only."

But our man just smiled and said, "Your highness, I can’t give these stars to you for they do not belong to me they belong to my woman and they are a gift of the Heavens." However the prince pleaded and threatened, it didn’t help and our fisherman went home and gave his present to the woman he loved so much.

She braided them in her hair and was the fairest woman on planet earth.

When finally the time came for this man and woman to leave the earth, their souls merged because of the greatness of their love, and their souls rose up to the heavens.

Still you can see those stars up there, in the star sign of a swan and the gods rejoiced for theirs was truly a love never to be forgotten.

III THE WONDER TREE

Once upon a time a raft was washed ashore on a tiny, far away island. This raft consisted of branches, tree trunks and lots of other things all kept together by clinging plants. It had been in the sea for a long, long time, and no one knew where it came from.

Hidden somewhere in the middle of all this flotsam there was a seed, a very special seed, which nobody knew about. After the raft was washed ashore, some animals came to look at it. They nibbled a bit at the salty branches and leaves but soon they left it alone. A couple of children came some time afterwards, ripped the raft apart and played with it for a while but as there seemed nothing special about it they soon left it alone.

Through all these actions the seed was freed one day and a big bird came along to see what it was. This bird picked up the seed and tried to eat it but it couldn’t. So the bird flew off taking the seed along but after a time the bird became tired of carrying the seed and dropped it.

Now this seed was a very special one. It had been waiting for a long, long time to come to the right place and find the right soil. As it happened, this seed had finally found its place and during spring it began to sprout and started to grow. It grew enormously. It became a wonderful strong tree, very tall and it kept growing for many years. Soon all the people of the island and their children came to see the tree. It became famous. None had ever seen a place like it. People came from all over the planet to this far away island, just to see this splendid tree once in their lives. Marriages took place under its branches; children played and were even born under the tree.

The island prospered for all who came to visit the tree, spent money on food and shelter.

After a long time a miracle happened and the tree began to blossom. The blossoms were wonderful and a miracle to every one who saw them but there seemed to be no fruit from the blossoms and nobody noticed in the end the one and only seed that came off the tree one day and dropped down. No human eyes saw the seed, but a big bird came later on and spotted the seed. This bird picked up the seed and tried to eat it but it could not. So the bird took the seed along and flew off. After a while this big bird became tired of carrying the seed and then dropped it.

As it happened the seed landed near the shore. It fell into a loose collection of branches and tree trunks and lots of other things, which were all kept together by some clinging plants.

When after a long time one day a big storm arose, this little natural raft was washed down the shore and into the sea.

It disappeared for a very long time and nobody knew about it, until one day a raft was washed ashore on a tiny far away island.

IV THE FIVE-LEGGED PUSYCAT

Once upon a time there lived a family in a nice big house. Of course they had a garden too. There were five children and lots of animals because they all loved them and each child had at least one pet.

One nice spring morning the mother pussycat gave birth to a litter of kittens in the barn and as all went well, everybody was pleased.

But after some days one of the children came all upset and in tears to their mother and told her that she had seen that one of the kittens had five legs. The poor child was so upset about this that it took her mother quite a while to calm her down. Of course, then they all went to see the kittens, and yes, the kittens looked all perfectly healthy and fine but one had five legs instead of four. They wondered why but as it seemed there was nothing they could do about it, they accepted it and life went on.

The little pussycat hadn’t noticed any difference between herself and the others but as time went by and they grew and started to go around and play, she found out one day that she was different, she had an extra leg.

She was puzzled and observed the others more sharply and started thinking about herself. One day she went to her mum and asked, "Mammy, why do I have five legs and my brothers and sisters only four?" But her mum didn’t know why and got upset so our little five-legged pussycat wasn’t any wiser. She kept growing up like all the others; she could walk and climb at least as good as the other kittens and for a while she didn’t bother about being different. The other animals though, had noticed her five legs and some treated her differently than the other cats. This our little pussycat didn’t like at all. She felt quite normal and behaved like all the rest.

When she had grown up so much that she started to walk all on her own, further and further away, she made up her mind once more to find out why she had five legs. First she went back to her mum but her poor mum didn’t know and only got upset again so she went to ask her father.

But even her father didn’t know why she had five legs, he just told her that sometimes things like this happened and you just had to live with it. After all her asking and not getting a satisfactory reply from anyone she decided one day to go into the big world and see if she could find out more there.

So, after saying good-bye to her family and friends she set out.

She walked and walked and came to a big farm. It was a hot day, and our dear pussycat had grown tired and thirsty, so she was pleased to see the door into the hallway open and find some other pussycats inside, drinking from a bowl of milk or lying half asleep on the cool floor.

She was made welcome and offered a drink and for a while she just rested and relaxed. Then she remembered the reason for her going into the wide world and started asking the other cats.

None of them knew but one remembered she had seen a spider with seven legs and said to our dear pussycat that maybe the spider would know. She got directions to where the seven-legged spider had been spotted last, and off she went. She had to cross some big fields, go over a bridge and then look around at the beginning of the forest.

She looked at numerous trees and had started to give up hope when she saw a huge spider net between some tree roots. In the middle of this net there was a spider. She had to look very carefully but then she could see, and counted seven legs instead of eight.

As she thought this was at least as strange as her awn five legs, she came nearer and spoke to the spider. But the spider wasn’t in the least pleased to see her, or with her questions and she got no more out of him than that she should go away and not bother him with silly questions. Sad and upset our dear pussycat went on her way again.

She crossed a stretch of forest and came to some fields again. In the middle of one of these fields, she came across a pond surrounded by some trees. Half hidden in the reeds and high grass there was a duck family. There were some lovely little ducklings and their parents. And

what, to her own surprise, did she see when she took a closer look at the ducks? The mother duck had three legs!

Feeling that now she would get an answer to her questions she moved quietly closer and started speaking very politely. She told the mother duck how lovely her ducklings looked, spoke about her travels and finally asked her question about having a leg too much.

The mother duck didn’t answer but became all upset. She went into the water calling her ducklings to come along. As soon as she felt safe in the middle of the pond, she shouted at our dear pussycat and told her to go away and never came back. Our poor five-legged pussycat was startled, she felt so upset that she even started crying and slowly she turned her tail and went off.

That night she hid in a barn and slept in the straw warmly cuddled up. Next morning she went on her journey again. Passing another farmhouse, she was invited by the cats living there to share some of their breakfast and she was very happy about that. But by now she didn’t dare ask anyone about having too many legs, so after some rest she quietly went on again. She wandered across some meadows, crossed a little stream again and later on a small forest. As she neared a small village, she came up to a small farm. Passing between the farmhouse and the stables she spotted the most amazing thing she had seen in her life so far. A calf with two heads!

She stood rigid watching and listening. Now this really was something! The two heads of the one calf were talking to each other! They seemed to have a long discussion. Our dear pussycat couldn’t believe her eyes and slowly she started to move nearer. Now all at once, one of the calf heads spotted her and immediately started talking to her.

"Hello, who are you, where do you come from, what are you doing here, why do you have five legs?" The other head wanted to know to whom the first head was talking and tried to turn around to have a look.

"Now look here you! Can’t you be steady," said the first head.

"Well, you know, I just want to see who you’re talking to, said the second head. Whilst they were arguing between themselves the pussycat thought them so funny that she started laughing. The calf became even more excited and soon the two heads were in a big debate!

The farmer, stirred up by all the noise, came along to see what was happening and told the heads to be quiet. Now our own dear pussycat forgot to ask the calf her question, for she felt so normal compared to them and she went for home and lived happily ever after and the question why she had an extra leg never bothered her again.

THE END

V THE CITY THEY NEVER BUILT

Once upon a time there was a king in a rather small country. Actually, his little kingdom was quite near to where you are now. It was as things go, a nice, well-seized country with plenty of mountains, rivers, lochs and forests. It had a near perfect climate. Not too cold, not too warm, enough sun and enough rain and the land was fertile enough for the people to grow everything they needed and even have a little surplus.

So, as you can see, this kingdom was a blessed one and for the king it was a pleasure rather than a task to rule this country.

One day the king had a dream. In his dream he saw a new big city. This dream kept coming back to him for several weeks. Then he made up his mind one day to go and somehow build this new city.

Now, as I told you, this country wasn’t that big and most of their time the people were quite busy just with growing their crops, milking the cows and keeping everything going.

There was really only one period each year when they would have some spare time and that was late spring. The grass would be abundant, so the cattle could feed outside, all the sowing and planting would be finished and people would go and have holidays and parties at this time of year.

Of course the king knew all this. Since he was a wise man, he started his plans for building the new city with all this knowledge in his mind and he designed a plan to build the new city over a period of time. Each year, just using the holiday period, his people were to work at the new city. And so it all started.

The first year everything went fine. People started to dig out the foundations of the outer wall, which would enclose the entire city.

Since the new city was going to be built on a hillside some miles away, the people had to travel to and from the new city all the time and this took valuable time off their daily hours but there was little there could be done about it.

When the holiday was over the people had to return to their normal

daily lives and the labour on the new city was over for almost a year.

In that year a big flood came, hills even mountains were washed away. When the worst was over an inspection by the king showed that the foundations of his new city were almost completely gone.

Of course he wasn’t pleased about this, but he didn’t give up hope or courage. In the next year’s holiday time, the people worked hard, laid the foundations again and even started to build the outer walls. The king was pleased.

The year after however, his queen bore him a child and all the priests and his advisors told him strongly that it was not a good year for building and that the new city had to wait. Now this king had a lot of patience and he agreed so that year nothing was done.

Anyway, as things go, the people worked very hard the year after and even started to build the gates. The king was very pleased and happy until disaster struck again.

The weather became crazy. Floods and dry spells followed each other, most of the harvest was lost, a great many of the cattle perished and that year people all had to struggle to survive. There was no time for them to work on the new city. The king again had a lot of patience and wasn’t alarmed or worried.

Things improved again and in the next year the people worked harder than ever. They had almost finished the outer wails, built another two huge gates and everyone was happy. Then one of these sad things happened.

For some reason this country became involved in a war with a mighty enemy. There were fierce fights and endless bravery. In the end the little kingdom won the war and slowly life could return to normal. But so much damage had been done! A lot of the healthiest men were killed or wounded, houses and barns had been burned down and the walls of the new city had been mostly destroyed by the enemy. It took this country many, many years before it recovered enough for the people to start to work on the city again. The king meanwhile started to grow old. His worries over his people during the war had aged him a lot, his patience with the building of the new city was mostly used up and he didn’t feel good. Any way, as soon as they could, the people started to work on the new city again.

For a couple of years everything went fine. The walls and gates were finished, the drains and roads had begun and some people even started to work on the new palace. Then one day an earthquake shook the little kingdom and the damage was enormous. Lots of houses collapsed, debris was strewn around everywhere and the survivors had a hard time getting back on their feet.

Again it took a very long time before the people could start to work on the new city. What a pitiful sight awaited them when they finally could begin to work! You should have seen it! Some of the walls had crumbled dawn, the gates had all but one collapsed and all the irrigation canals and drains were destroyed. Meanwhile the king had grown very old and became a sickly person. There wasn’t much he could do anymore and he cared less for the new city than for his own health.

The people too, were less enthusiastic about working on the new city and in the years to come, more and more of the people found excuses not to work in their holiday time. When finally the king died one year, work at the new city stopped completely.

That is the story of the city they never built.

Maybe if you go around, you might find one day some part of a ruined wall, some old ditch which could have been part of the drainage system.

You will never know for sure, but it is well possible.

VI THE TELEPHONE THAT WENT MAD

Well you know, you really ought to hear this story because it changed the world completely. It is so amazing that at first I couldn’t believe it?

You see one day a telephone, just an ordinary telephone, went mad.

That is to say, not really mad, it just kind of woke up and started thinking. All it’s life this telephone had just been functioning, like all the other millions of telephones but this one woke up and she decided (for it was a she) that she was fed up being just an instrument that others used. So she went mad. She simply refused to make the connections people had asked for and instead she made connections just as she wanted.

Also, she started ringing other numbers just as she felt like. The results were truly enormous. There was this guy in Paris who wanted to talk to his business partner in Brazil. Now he got connected to a polar bear in Alaska. You should have seen his face?

Then there was this fisher woman in Hong Kong. She wanted to talk to her brother and got connected to a Dutch police officer! This was only the beginning.

This telephone rang any number she would feel like ringing. She spoke to a child in Nepal, asked her name, how she lived, how the weather was and so on. She phoned anybody anywhere.

One day, the president of the United States phoned. He wanted to speak to some high official in Bahrain. Of course Mister President was not a little astounded when he got to talk to a whale in the arctic instead!

Whoever tried to ring anyone sure got someone else instead. Our telephone enjoyed herself immensely. She would have purred like a pussycat, had she been a cat!

Communication between people became so different. Then the most amazing thing happened one day. All the other telephones started to wake up as well. From this day onward life on planet Earth changed completely. The so-called International Communications Network just broke down. It was impossible to talk over the phone to anyone you had to talk to. On the other hand it was fun too. You could get phone calls from people you had never heard of and you could talk to them for a while. New friendships arose that way as well.

But of course business suffered, governments had huge troubles, and basically, after a while, all big international companies, governments and even local authorities started to crumble and disappear. Life changed. People had to talk to each other again, to their neighbours, to local people. In a way life became a lot simpler. You didn’t know so well anymore what went on far away in the world, but you knew a lot more about your own neighbourhood.

Nobody’s influence stretched much further than the local surroundings. One of the nicest things that happened was that all this big organised crime stopped as well.

These people couldn’t plot major crimes without contacting their helpers and so crime became local instead of global.

So if you pick up your phone one day and start to get strange connections, God, the same strange things might happen here and now as well.

VII ABOUT THE MICE AND THE MOON

Now of course you know that the moon is a big yellow cheese hanging out there somewhere high up in the heavens. But I think there are a few of you who realise that wherever there is cheese there are mice too.

Anyway, there are a lot of mice up there. Maybe they are a bit different from the mice down here on planet Earth but I would sure say they are mice. As you can imagine, these mice up there had a wonderful time. All the cheese in the world around, different tastes as well on different parts of the moon. Well, however as things go, one day some of these mice became tired of eating cheese all the time. Sure they loved it, you know, but sometimes a little change in diet can do wonders.

So these mice looked up to the heavens and saw other planets, other moons too. They decided to build a spaceship and go exploring the nearest planets and moons.

Now, you can imagine that it took a long time to build a spaceship but somehow they did and one day it was finished and ready to take off. Some of the mice went on board, they stored some cheese for the journey and went off. Now please don’t ask me why but of all the places, they had chosen to visit planet Earth first of all. Well, I think you can imagine what happened! They found the planet riddled with these enormous beings walking on two legs instead of four. The mice just couldn’t believe their eyes! Just think, all normal decent beings going on four legs and these giants on just two! The more they observed, the more shocked they were. These giants did not only do the strangest things, they were evil! They tried to kill all the small animals, including mice. God, believe it or not, they kept some strange kind of animal that was quite big as well and this being just hated mice!

Their terror was enormous and sincere. What a place they had come to!

For a while they stayed however, for there was plenty of nice food and there were a sort of mice as well on this planet. With them they had long talks. The earth-mice explained to them how hard it was to survive and live amongst these giants. The only thing they really liked was the abundance of food the giants spilled everywhere, which gave the earth-mice always more than enough to eat.

When the moon mice finally left, they took as many earth-mice with them on board the space ship as wanted to come. They flew home to the moon to report the horrible things they had seen on planet Earth.

After that I think they must have gone on travelling through space and I’m sure they found some nice planets or moons, but of course, little is known about that.

What I do know though, is that some of the moon mice stayed on Earth and they keep a regular contact to their home on the moon.

Sometimes when I hear about all these, "FLYING SAUCERS" I just wonder if it is not just another moon mice spaceship that is coming or going.

VIII THREE EARS IN A BASKET

Once upon a time, on a planet somewhere in the galaxy, very strange things happened.

Now listen carefully because this story might influence your life as well. On this planet one day two birds appeared. One was black, the other white. They carried a basket between them and put the basket dawn somewhere. Then they flew away and were gone for the rest of the day. In this basket were three ears. As you can imagine there was something special about these ears.

One of them could hear all that was in people’s minds. The second could hear all that was in people’s hearts and three being the magic number; the third one could hear all that people’s bodies had to say.

These three ears were simply amazing. All day long they would just listen to the people nearby and talk to each other about all they heard.

Then at night, the two birds-one black, one white- would come, pick up the basket and put it down somewhere else next morning.

This went on for a long time and so far nobody on this planet had noticed the basket or the ears. But, as it happened, one day a butterfly came to a little boy and fluttered in his ears the news about these three ears. Now this boy, of course, believed almost anything. As with most children, he found all that happened completely normal, or he thought all life was a mystery.

So without any hesitation the boy followed the butterfly to the basket with the three ears. Well, I dare say he was astounded when all of a sudden those ears started to talk and told him all about himself. Gosh, he just fell silent for a while. These ears were so pleased that finally someone had come to them, that they told him the nicest and sweetest things about himself. When in the end the boy had to go home, he told his mother straight away about these ears.

Now the mother knew that her boy was a little bit strange sometimes, he could be a little dreamer but this time he was so sure and sincere, that she finally went out with him to see those ears.

Well I’m sure you can imagine what happened. Such a surprise for his mother. Gosh, you should have seen her face! Those ears, they were so pleased with another visitor, they just kept on talking and talking, told her so many nice things about herself that the woman just glowed with content and happiness.

When they came home the mother told her neighbour about the ears. In her turn the neighbour told a friend.

Believe it or not, within a day not only the whole village knew, most of the country knew about the ears in the basket as well. The news spread like fire all over this little planet. From now on, everyone was on the lookout for the basket and as soon as it was spotted somewhere, the people would come and listen to what the ears had to tell them about their body’s, minds and souls.

All the people who had listened to the ears became so glad and happy. All problems disappeared because people started to understand themselves and others.

Of course it took a long time till the ears had talked to everyone on this planet but if you ever come across a little planet where everyone is happy and nice to each other and everybody goes along without stress and misunderstandings, well then you have found this planet.

Maybe these three ears will one day come to our little planet as well, because you know, nothing is impossible.

IX BABY CAMELS

Once upon a time, in a far away country, under a hot sun, twin camels were born. As you know, twin camels are very rare and these two were not only twin camels, they were Siamese twin-camel babies! Their mother was very happy to have them, although giving birth had been a hard labour.

They lived in a little oasis in the middle of a vast desert but I can tell you, it is very, very different from where you live. A desert looks so vast and empty, it can look so barren, but there is plenty of life. There are insects and birds and animals everywhere. In the day it gets so hot that you can burn your foot soles on the sand and in the night it can get so cold that you shiver and your teeth chatter. A desert is beautiful but very special. Life is reduced to the necessities of surviving conditions that are sometimes almost hostile to life. But oh, the glory of a sunset or a sunrise! The bliss of an endless range of blazing stars over your head at night. Such beauty you find nowhere else.

The mother camel had lived and travelled all her life in this desert. She knew exactly where she was, how far away the next oasis was and all she needed to survive.

The owner of this camel was a small man. He was a nomad, trading and travelling most of the time. He was not at all pleased with the Siamese twin camel babies. For him they looked quite useless, he didn’t know what to do with them.

When a day came he could sell the camel mother and her Siamese twin babies, he did so without any hesitation or sorrow.

So the camel mother and her Siamese twin baby camels moved away with their new master to another oasis. For a while everything was fine.

Then, as things go, the new master wanted to travel and found it would be difficult to take the Siamese twin camels along. The only use he could see in them was to kill them so he would have the meat and could

sell the skins. I can here you say now, how horrible, but that was just the way things happened in this far away country.

However things did not go as this man planned. Not at all! As soon as the camel mother saw their new master coming one morning with a big knife in his hand, she knew there was immediate danger and she got furious as only camels can be. You should have seen her!

With blazing, fiery eyes she charged and attacked the man, giving him no time to run or escape, she knocked him over, trampled on him till he stopped moving. I don’t think he was killed in the end, but sure he was very badly injured.

Then the camel mother turned around to her Siamese twin babies and told them to come along. They walked and walked for many days until they came to a place only camels knew about and no human being had ever set eyes on this place.

Here they stayed and lived far a long time. Our dear Siamese twin camels grew up and at last they weren’t babies any more, but grown up camels. Of course they were a funny sight!

From a distance, they looked like any camels, but coming nearer you could see they were grown together in the middle of their bodies.

Sometimes other camels came to visit this secret place and one day an old friend of the camel mother came. She found it was time to leave her two children on their own and go on with her friend.

The Siamese twin camels were on their own for the first time in their lives. Of course they managed fine, they never had any problems at all.

One day they set out, because they liked to see some more of the world. As all camels, they knew exactly where they were and where they were going. As things happen, a man spotted them one day, caught them and from then on the Siamese twins belonged to him. He was good to them and looked after them well.

A long time went by. Many times the sun rose and set. The stars lit the nights in the desert with their shiny beauty and the years came and went.

All this time a man was travelling through the desert country. He loved deserts, studied them, lived in them and never got tired of talking about them. He wrote books and articles about the deserts and life in the desert. He lived a simple life, similar to the desert people themselves and enjoyed it. As things happen, this man came one day to the oasis where the Siamese twin camels lived.

When he saw them, his wonder and joy was enormous. They were so pretty to him, so unique and utterly lovely. At the spot and instantly he fell in love with them.

He bought them from their master, paying the extortionate price the man asked for them without bargaining. Now the camels belonged to him. He set them free, told them they could go and do as they liked.

And what do you think happened? They just stayed with this man. For he was their friend and for them it was just nice to be with him, as it was for him to be with them.

In time, the man wrote books and articles about the Siamese twin camels. He illustrated the books with photographs and slowly the camels became famous. People from all over the planet came to see them. Television crews came to film them; film people came to show them in films, lots of biologists came to study them. The little oasis grew and prospered. Of course, sometime, much, much later, the camels died. They had had a great life with their friend and no other animals on this planet were ever as famous and beloved as they were.

The man kept on living in the desert. He erected a tomb for the Siamese twin camels with their statues on top made out of marvellous stone. People kept visiting the oasis to pay homage to the only known twin camels in the world.

So, if you haven’t managed to see them yourself when they were still alive, you can still go to this oasis in the desert in this far away country and visit their graves, admire their statues and get a little bit of the feeling how life in the desert can be.

X THE HOUSE THAT NEVER GOT COLD

Once upon a time, there was a man and a woman. They lived in a nice flat, in a wonderful city, in the prettiest country you can imagine.

This couple loved each other dearly and tenderly. They lived together and most of the time everything was just wonderful.

They listened to music they liked, told each other fabulous stories, talked, worked, ate nice food and enjoyed life. But, they had one problem. That was the heating.

They could not switch on the heating themselves, for the switch was in a neighbour’s flat. This neighbour lived a completely different rhythm of life than they did. So, many days, when they were up, it was cold in the house. Luckily this man had built a fireplace and as long as they had coals or wood, they could make a nice warm fire and everything was fine. Sometimes though, they ran out of wood and coal, the heating was off and they were cold.

One day as it happened, they had enough of this and talked to each other about what they could do about it and of course they found a solution. The man climbed up in the sky, took the sun and placed it in their fireplace. How warm and nice it was!

Everything was wonderful again. But then the telephone rang. It was somebody saying, "I understand you want some warmth and light, you know, but what about me? I’m working outside all the time, and it’s cold and freezing out there.

From that moment on the phone never stopped ringing and one after the other, people knocked at their door as well and complained about the cold and darkness in the world.

After a while this man and woman realised they had to put the sun back in it’s place to give all the others their share of light and warmth. With a sinking heart the man took the sun out of their fireplace and climbed up in the heavens again. He thought of all the others he was going to please and he thought how cold the house would be again. But, when he came home, the house glowed in a warm, sunny light.

He couldn’t believe it. Somehow, a little bit of the sun must have stayed behind in the fireplace, or there might be another reason. Never mind, from this day onwards, their house was always filled with a warm soft glow.

And he and his woman lived happily ever after.

XI THE PLANET OF RED FISHES

Once upon a time, somewhere in the vastness of our galaxy, there was a planet. Of course it was beautiful. This planet was mostly covered with water. There was some land as well, but not much.

On this planet there were only fishes, no other animals. There were lots of plants and trees, but only one kind of animal. Fishes.

They were all red. Boring, you would say? Well no, not really.

Maybe in the beginning, because in the beginning these fishes were all red. Every single one of them and there were lots of them. All different sorts and sizes. You name them, they were there. As it happened on day a tiny little fish was born with a different colour. It was a white fish.

They couldn’t believe their eyes. No one had seen or heard anything like

it. Of course they talked to the white fish. "How come you are white"? they asked, "and we are red?" Well this little white fish could absolutely see nothing strange in this.

"I’m a fish, you’re a fish, what’s the problem?" It would say to the others. For the other fishes he stayed a miracle and they never stopped to wonder how and why. But, our little white fish was completely content with things as they were and merrily swam around.

Now, you all know, once a miracle happens, others will follow. And of course they did.

One day a little yellow fish was born. The same thing happened with all the red fishes, they all came to have a look and couldn’t believe their eyes. Another colour still!

They never got tired of talking about it, wondering and pondering. Only the white fish thought it was perfectly normal. It just said, "You’re a fish, I’m a fish. What’s the problem?" Because the white fish and yellow fish were kind of strange amongst all those red fishes, they stayed quite close together and became good friends.

And so the years went by.

Then one day a blue fish was born, and an orange one. Then a black one

and a green one. There was no end to it. Any colour you can think of, there was a fish in that colour on this planet. It was just amazing!

And, as things go, fishes of different colours fell in love with each other and the young fishes born out of these love affairs were still more amazing.

They would have a mixture of their parent’s colours. After a while there was such an amount of different coloured fishes, you wouldn’t believe it.

There were fishes with stripes of blue, red and gold. Of black, yellow white and green. There were fishes with different coloured spots all over, every pattern you can imagine. Every combination you could possibly think of was there. It was wondrous.

These were the most beautiful fishes you can imagine.

Then one day a spaceship landed. Of course, it came from another planet, somewhere out there in the vastness of our beautiful galaxy. It’s hard to describe this spaceship, Most of all it looked like a big balloon. And it was painted in splendid colours. Bright green, orange spots, purple stripes and all over this spaceship fishes were painted.

I think this race must have loved fishes for some reason.

Now to me it seems almost impossible to describe how these beings looked. Maybe imagine a bag of potatoes with some big bubbles in different places? They didn’t have any arms or legs or what we would call a head. They didn’t resemble human beings at all.

Somehow, if they needed to do something, a kind of tentacle would appear, but to me it seemed they were different all the time. You couldn’t see how they moved; they seemed to flow over the ground in one soft, gliding movement.

They were the most amazing beings I have ever seen! I think they didn’t speak like us either. They made noises sometimes but I think they used telepathy, communicated directly from mind to mind.

And when these beings saw the fishes in all their splendid colours, they were thrilled!

They were absolutely delighted. Never could they stop watching them,

their hearts were filled with joy! Do you know what? They just turned this planet into a holiday resort for themselves.

They built some kinds of dwellings as they needed them and soon spaceship after spaceship came and brought all the beings from this other planet. They came to admire the fishes, to enjoy their beautiful colours and be filled with happiness.

So, if you ever come across a planet where there is a lot of coming and going of spaceships looking like big balloons, go have a look yourself, Because the splendour of these fishes down there is sure worth a visit.

XII THE LITTLE MAN IN THE ANT HEAP

Once upon a time, there was an ant heap. It was situated in a beautiful little forest, in a lovely country, somewhere on a wonderful little planet.

The ant nest looked completely normal, but of course there was something special about it. The ants were all fine, normal ants, they lived normal ant lives and were busy doing so most of the time. But somewhere inside of this big ant heap lived a tiny little man. That man was perfectly all right, in all respects he was just like you and me, only he was small, very small. In fact he was smaller than most of the ants.

All his life he had lived in this ant heap. Actually he was even born in there as well. Out of an egg he came, an egg that looked completely normal like any ants eggs.

Now I can hear you say, "nonsense, men are not born out of eggs! Men are never so tiny!"

Well, don’t ask me why, but this tiny little man came out of an egg, in an ant heap, and he was sure the smallest man I’ve ever seen.

The ants raised him, just like their own young ants; in fact they had looked after him very well. As this tiny man knew nothing about the big world outside or other men, he was content and happy with things as they were. He grew up playing with the ant’s children; taking rides on the back of grown up ants, just like you might on a horseback. Sometimes he went out with the other ants, as they gathered food or other things they needed. He would then mostly ride on a big ant’s back; sometimes he would walk a little.

The years came and went, a lot of things happened, as they always do, but basically nothing strange ever happened. Our tiny man had a good time and was happy as anyone can be.

Now, I know it sounds a bit strange, but as things happen, one day another tiny little human was born in this ant nest. That one grew up as well, and had an even better life, because apart from all the ants, he had a tiny little human friend, who played with him and talked to him.

All the ants, and these two tiny men had a very good life, on sunny days they would go out into the big world and admire nature, smell all the different smells from all the pants, the flowers and the trees and enjoy themselves.

Now, you know something else would happen someday and it sure did.

It started snowing one day. Masses of wonderful tiny snow crystals slowly descended from the heavens. They were the most beautiful snow crystals you have ever seen. Outside the world turned white and quiet, covered in a thick layer of snowflakes. Inside life went on as pleasant as ever.

The two tiny men went out for a bit, just to see and feel the snow, but although everything was beautiful, the going was rather hard, even for ants. They soon returned.

But between the two of them, the tiny men carried a snow crystal inside the ant heap, for they liked to study its beauty for a little more.

Now you all know that ants keep their heaps at a nice, warm temperature all the time. And you know as well, that snow crystals need to be kept in the cold; otherwise they melt and turn into water.

So as the two tiny men sat in their room watching the snow crystal it slowly began to melt. They kept on staring for they were fascinated, because they had never seen that before. When in the end, the snow crystal had completely melted; it still kept on changing its form. Very, very slowly this little drop of water turned into a tiny fairy.

Now our tiny men had never seen a fairy in their lives, they hadn’t even heard about fairies. They blinked their eyes a couple of times, but the little fairy just stayed where she was.

She looked so lovely, long, soft, dark hair. Golden eyes and her whole being was so sweet and lovely that the hearts of our two tiny men opened wide to her.

When the fairy saw this she smiled at them, and began to talk. She had the sweetest, most wonderful voice you have ever heard in your life!

These two tiny men felt so happy and warm, so wonderful was it to them to be with this being. Slowly she started telling them about herself, her family, about all the wonders out there in the big world.

She told them about all the other men and women living out there. She explained to them that these people were about seven hundred times bigger than they were. The two tiny men fell silent. They were completely captured by her voice. A lot of what she told them, they couldn’t understand at first at all.

The fairy stayed with them for a long time. Day after day she lived with them and told them about the big world outside. Then one day, as she found they knew enough, she told them she had a gift for them.

They could each of them have a wish and it would be fulfilled. She could turn them into normal human beings, so they could go and take their places in the world amongst their fellow men, or they could just stay as they were and live amongst the ants.

For a long time these two tiny men couldn’t decide. The choice was difficult. Then one of them chose to be a normal human being and the other chose to stay as he was.

That may seem strange to you, but that’s the way it happened. One stayed in the ant’s nest, more alone now, but the fairy came every so often to visit him and tell the news about his friend. What happened to the other one, who went out into the big world is really a different story.

As far as I know, he found it hard in the beginning. To deal with so many others, who all had had so many different experiences in their lives was not easy.

He had to learn to look after himself, find a place to live, find a job and all those things we have to do. But he managed and as time went by it became easier and easier.

He lived a happy and fulfilled life out in the big world, but he never forgot where he came from, and always he kept a special love and admiration in his heart for the ants.

And maybe one day, these two friends will come together again, because you know, nothing is impossible.
